About Freedom Communities -
Freedom Communities was established in response to a 2014 study that ranked Charlotte 50th out of 50 major U.S. cities for upward mobility. By focusing on the "micro" (individual family needs like mindset and mental health) and the "macro" (infrastructure like housing and schools), they aim to ensure that a child's zip code doesn't determine their future success.
Family Stability (Moms Moving Forward): This is their flagship program. It is a 12-month, two-generation initiative for single mothers. It provides cash incentives, mental health resources, and career coaching to help families move toward economic mobility.
Affordable Housing: They work to both build new affordable housing and preserve "Naturally Occurring Affordable Housing" (NOAH). Their goal is often to create pathways for tenants to eventually become homeowners, helping them build generational wealth.
Early Childhood Education: Recognizing that the Freedom Drive area was a "childcare desert," they partnered to open the Bright Future Early Learning Center, which provides high-quality education for children aged 0–3.
Economic Development: In 2024, they launched the Freedom Business Collective, a hub that provides affordable office space, networking, and training for local entrepreneurs and small business owners.
